We expect chairs to be comfortable, we appreciate the load they bear, but should design adhere to such expectations? Discomfort is one of the new forms of escapism that release us from the familiarity and safety of contemporary life. Peoples’ growing obsession with endurance activities, fetishes, terror and the unknown represent a shift in our ideals – a subconscious rebellion against the vanilla. (Katie Lenton and Adam Smith)
